Ward 2 councilman was conscious and speaking as emergency assistance was requested; runoff opponent Jena Smith offers prayers for his family.
LAWTON, Okla. (2026-10-27) — Lawton City Councilman Taron Epps Sr. experienced an apparent medical emergency Tuesday evening, shortly after the City Council adjourned its regularly scheduled meeting.
The incident occurred inside the City Council chambers, where Epps, who had been seen using a cane, appeared to be in visible distress.
Despite his apparent discomfort, Epps remained conscious and was able to speak during the incident.
Deputy City Manager Dewayne Burk called for an ambulance as the situation unfolded.
The Lawton Town Crier was present and witnessed the events following the council meeting.
At the time of publication, the nature of the medical emergency, Epps’ condition, and whether he required hospitalization had not been confirmed.

Ward 2 Runoff Opponent Responds
The medical emergency comes just one week before the November 3 runoff election for Lawton’s Ward 2 City Council seat.
Epps, who was appointed to the council in 2025, is seeking to retain his position against challenger Jena M. Smith. Neither candidate secured a majority in the August 25 election, resulting in the upcoming runoff.
Following the incident, the Lawton Town Crier reached out to Smith for comment.
Smith responded with a message of support for Epps and his family:
“Taron and Victoria are in my prayers. They are both Good people and God has his arms around the whole family “
Her response comes as the two candidates approach the final days of their campaign for the Ward 2 seat.

Epps’ Service on the City Council
Epps joined the Lawton City Council in September 2025 after being appointed to fill the Ward 2 vacancy.
A retired U.S. Army veteran with more than 20 years of military service, Epps previously served as Chief Operations Officer of the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce. He has also been involved in community organizations and local economic development initiatives.
His current council term and upcoming election are part of the city’s process for filling the remainder of the previously vacant Ward 2 seat.
Awaiting Additional Information
As of this report, no official information has been confirmed regarding the cause or severity of Epps’ medical emergency.
The Lawton Town Crier will continue seeking verified information regarding his condition and will update this report as additional details become available.
